I saw it, Robby! It is a vulture. A vulture with a man’s eyes! How can that be? If I received such a missive I would most surely think the sender had gone mad. Yet, I know I am not mad and I have seen this beast. There’s both a cunning and a madness in those eyes. Something human, but not human. An inhuman intelligence. It watches us, assesses us. It knows who is weak. Its eyes are streaked with a yellow film and Dutch believes the mustard gas has seeped into its brain. As if it’s not enough to have a vulture demon hunting us, we are now faced with a giant vulture demon tainted with additional madness induced by the horrors men perpetrate upon each other.

The black-winged beast is taller than a man when it rises up to its full height. It can’t open its wings wide when it’s in the trench because the trench walls are too narrow to allow it to spread them fully open. But I have seen it use its wings like a shroud. The cursed vulture enveloped Mickelson in its big black wings, and then he dropped dead with a ragged gash ripped into his neck. It uses its sharp beak to attack a man’s throat, puncturing through flesh with a murderous strike. Yes, I called it murderous. For I don’t think it’s just an animal hunting for food. There’s an element of sport to its attacks.

We are trying to stay strong, but every man here is terrified. We cannot go forward because the Germans have machine guns and mortar fire lined up on the open ground that separates our trench from theirs. Anyone who tries to set foot on that no-man’s land is either ripped to shreds by machine gun bursts or blown to bits by expertly targeted mortar fire. We cannot go back because our orders are to hold the line at all costs. What I had told you before still holds true now - anyone who leaves the trench and flees back to the command post is deemed a coward and is immediately put before a firing squad.

All my love to you and Mother.

- Verne.
